Why are Dogs a Human's Best Friend?

"It's not because they are better than dolphins, parrots, seals and cats at doing things."
There is no reason for dog lovers to be disheartened or annoyed by assertions in a recently published paper in a scientific journals that there are several other animals that equal or surpass canine talents. It really does not matter to most of them that canines cannot recognise themselves in a mirror unlike chimpanzees and dolphins and that they don not have an episodic memory as pigs, pigeons and chimpanzees have. Nor do most of them care if dolphins, pigs, goats and seals are as good as dogs at following pointing and if sheep, pigeons and chimpanzees can also identify humans by face as dogs do. It is irrelevant that pigs can also distinguish human by their smell and cats can recognise voices. Even the fact that some types of bears, badgers, otters, pandas and chimpanzees are as good as dogs when it comes to using tools is not germane. After all, dogs are not a human's best friend because of their intellectual capabilities. For that, humans have other options- such as other human, or even Alexa.
Dog lovers will aver that other humans and all those animals that are apparently in the same intellectual bracket or even surpass canines, cannot do two crucial things dogs do: wag their tails and lick their human to signify a gamut of emotions from empathy, concern and happiness to unconditional love. That's their USP.
